Neighborhood Notes

Updated July 22, 2008

NEIGHBORHOOD GRANT IMPROVEMENTS & UPDATE:

  • Installation of the new park play structures is completed and looks terrific!    A shade structure has been approved for this year.  This was made possible with the approval of a $12,000 grant plus $6,000 in grant money from the Camelot Park Villas HOA.  The structure, which will include a lighting fixture, will cost a total of $22,000, and the City of Tempe has generously offered to make up the difference--don't we live in a fantastic city!?!

WESTERN CANAL MULTI-USE PATH PROJECT UPDATE:

  • Construction of the Western Canal Multi-Use Path Project is scheduled to begin in August 2008.

  • The project will extend for six miles (from southbound Price Frontage Road to Arizona Mills Mall) along the Western Canal connecting parks, schools, and other destinations in Tempe.

  • The project includes a multi-use path with lighting, landscaping and public art.  To view a map of the project area, visit www.tempe.gov/tim.  Please contact Eric Iwersen (480-350-8810) with any questions.

SPRING CLEAN UP DAY:

  • Do you know a neighbor in need?  Perhaps a resident who could use some good, old fashioned neighborly help in cleaning up their front yard due to an unexpected circumstance?  Let us know and we'll try to schedule the Spring Clean Up Committee to our friends who need it!

NEIGHBORHOOD SAFETY TIPS:

If you notice something that just doesn't "look right" in our neighborhood, there's a good chance it's not!  Please report any suspicious, non-emergency issue to the Tempe Police Non-Emergency number at 480-350-8311.

  • Do you leave your garage door open at times?  Please be aware that there are persons who will enter your open garage and help themselves to anything they can carry off--including your garage door opener from your vehicle--so please keep those garage doors closed when ever you are not in front of your home.

  • Hints for avoiding mailbox tampering and mail theft:
    1. Do not leave mail in your mailbox overnight.  (If you are leaving for vacation, stop your mail or ask your neighbor to pick up your mail each day)

    2. Deposit mail at a Post Office or blue Postal Service collection box (Especially outgoing bills/checks)
    3. If you see suspicious activity around your mailbox, please call your local police or the Postal Inspection Service 602 223-3660.
    4. Don't raise your flag when you put outgoing mail in your mailbox.  If you receive mail on a daily basis the postman will open you box anyway.   Raising the flag is a signal to thieves that your box contains mail.

    5. You may be entitled to certain information and services as a result of mail victimization.  Call the Inspection Service office for Publication 308.

  • We want to let you know that you can find out if our neighborhood has sex offenders living in our area.   www.azsexoffender.com

RECYCLING IMPROVEMENTS IN TEMPE

The city of Tempe recently has added new items to its recycling list. New additions include beer and soda carriers, foil food containers and boxes for bar soap, detergent and cereal. The city’s recycling program diverts more than 15,000 tons of material from landfills each year and is celebrating its 15th anniversary this month. When you recycle, you are not only helping the environment, but you are also helping your city save money. Material brought to landfills costs the city money to dispose of while recycled items are sold to generate revenue. Tempe is working on programs to recycle plastic grocery bags which currently cannot be placed in the recycling bins. A program to recycle rigid plastics such as toys and storage bins is also in the works. For more information on these programs and a complete list of acceptable items to place in the blue bins, visit http://www.tempe.gov/recycling.
